Sluggish win over Barlow

With the Corvallis High girls basketball team clinging to a two-point lead in the closing seconds Saturday night, McKenzie Redberg came up with one of the biggest rebounds of the season.

Barlow had just missed two free throws that could have tied the game with 10 seconds left. But the Bruins grabbed a rebound and took two more shots that missed.

Redberg leaped and grabbed the rebound, then got the ball out and Katie Schrock converted with an uncontested layup to seal a hard-fought 37-33 nonconference win over the Bruins on Saturday evening.

The Spartans were playing their third game in four days and struggled to make shots all game.

But they led by as many as nine in the fourth quarter before the Bruins mounted a comeback. Twice Barlow cut the score to a point, but each time the Spartans were able to respond.

Down 30-21 with 5:55 left, the Bruins went on a 9-1 run to make it 31-30 with 2:36 left.

Schrock hit two free throws to push the advantage back to three and Gabe Johnson hit one of two free throws to make it 34-30 with 1:34 to play.

But Barlow's Audrey Gloss banked home a three from the wing and just like that it was back to a one-point game at 34-33.

Redberg was fouled with 23 seconds left and hit one of two free throws. Barlow's Alicia Scafidi drove to the basket and a foul was called with 10 seconds left.

She missed both free throws and Barlow had two more cracks but couldn't score before the rebound by Redberg and layup by Schrock.

Schrock led the Spartans (14-3) with nine points while Johnson had eight.

Neither team shot the ball well from the floor or the free-throw line. Barlow was 8-for-17 from the line and CHS was 13-for-25.

The Spartans never trailed and led by as many as nine in the first quarter.

Barlow stayed close with 3-pointers at the end of the first and third quarters.

The three at the end of the third made it 25-21 and looked to give the Bruins some momentum headed into the final quarter.

But sophomore Whitney Redberg drained a 3 35 seconds into the fourth to give CHS the 28-21 lead.

The Spartans return to Mid-Willamette Conference play on Wednesday at home against Dallas. The Dragons are coming off a three-point loss at home to Silverton on Friday and are in the chase for fourth place and the final playoff berth from the conference.
