The last time the Corvallis High girls basketball team walked off the court after a game was 10 days ago, and it wasn’t a good feeling. The Spartans had blown a nine-point second half lead and lost for the first time at home to a team they felt they should beat.
It has been a long 10 days since.
“It wasn’t easy for me to put that out of my mind,” senior Eva Oriakhi said. “It made me practice harder and my teammates practice harder.”
That stretch ends Friday night when the Spartans return to Spartan Gym to take on McNary. A win and the Spartans go into the Christmas break with a 4-2 record before taking part in the Lake Oswego Tournament right after Christmas.
McNary comes in with a 3-3 record and is 2-1 against Mid-Willamette Conference teams. The Celtics defeated Woodburn (64-20) and Dallas (49-36), and dropped a 54-52 decision at home against West Albany.
It’s about time for another game. The Spartans admit the time spent during practice was needed, but they are pretty darn tired of beating up on each other. They want to take out their frustration from back-to-back losses on someone else.
“We’re sick-and-tired of playing each other,” senior Taylor Westly said after Thursday’s practice. “I am very excited to go out and just play.”
The break from games may have come at the right time, as the Spartans played four games in 11 days. Add in school work and the Winter Formal last Saturday, and the players were happy to get a couple of days off.
The time in practice has been well spent working on being consistent and boxing out, areas the Spartans have struggled with at times over the first five games.
“After those two losses, we are all ready for a win,” junior point guard Gabe Johnson said. “Hopefully it will make us play harder.”
