It’s got to be tough to get up and be ready to play a game at 10 a.m. It seemed that way for Springfield on Saturday as the Millers traveled back up to Corvallis to take on the Spartans.
Corvallis jumped out to an 11-3 lead after the first quarter and kept up strong defensive pressure and built a 14-point advantage in the third quarter.
But Springfield was able to cut into that lead and trimmed the margin to three. On several occasions, the Spartans hit crucial free throws, including two each from Kayla Laney and Alaina Adams to push the lead back to five.
Johnson had another fine game with 14 points and seven assists. She posted 22 points in Tuesday’s win.
McKenzie Redberg had a solid game Saturday with 10 points.
After the 43-35 win, the players and coaches dispersed to watch the Civil War game between Oregon State and Oregon.
Coach Joe Williamson, an avid Ducks fan, and his family headed down to Autzen to take in the action.
The juniors, Gabe, McKenzie, and Leah headed over to the Kayla and Karly’s house to watch the game.
But first they had to do some dress shopping for a photo they are taking on Sunday.
When they got back, they scarfed down some Local Boyz food and gathered on the couch to watch the rest of the game.
Oregon State held a 21-7 lead and looked to have gone on top when a touchdown catch was ruled incomplete.
Soon after, the Ducks marched down the field and scored, prompting a call from Joe to the girls.
Some good-natured ribbing back and forth took place.
Karly yelled something like “scoreboard” and they hung up. A couple of seconds later and it was all tied at 21-21.
The phone calls and text messages continued. When Oregon took a 28-21 lead, they dreaded the call.
When OSU came back to tie, the call to Autzen was quick, and when Joe answered, the girls serenaded him with the OSU fight song.
“I’m glad to see you have some spirit left,” Joe said. “You sounded pretty dead the last few times.”
About that time, McKenzie made a bold prediction: “I don’t think either team will score again and it will go to overtime.” She added that both teams would probably miss a field goal in regulation.
Psychic.
That’s what happened and the Beavers finally came away with the win, 38-31 in double OT.
Maybe Joe will make them run more on Sunday because they were so obnoxious. He is the coach, after all.
Next game: Monday at home against Thurston.
