One last night of fun

At first glance, Karly Laney looks like a nice young lady. Challenge her to a wrestling match and you find out just how tough and mean she can be.

That’s what happened to Leah Sietz on Sunday night.

Of course, it was Karly who started the whole thing. Leah gave her some croutons to hold and Karly, being the nice person she is, decided to eat them.

That outraged Leah who grabbed Karly and told her to put her cup of water down because she didn’t want the water to spill all over coach Joe Williamson’s floor.

Karly finally caved and put the cup down.

Assistant coach Lindsay Schnell put her money on Leah.

Big mistake. Big one.

In no time flat, Karly had Leah twisted around and then she was on top of her, pinning her shoulders to the kitchen floor.

Karly still had some of the croutons left in her mouth and she started to drool, not a pretty sight if you are Leah.

“Stop drooling Karly, that’s gross,” her sister Kayla said.

Finally, Karly lets Leah up.

“I should have just dropped it in her mouth,” Karly said with a smile.

I’m really glad she didn’t. I bet Leah is too.

It was a fun evening at coach’s house as most of the players on the varsity team gathered for some pizza and a chance to meet individually with the coaches and share their goals for the season.

It’s a season that begins today (Monday) with a jamboree at Willamette High. Then the first game on Tuesday at home against McKay.

Sunday was a good time for the team members to bond, and be a bit competitive. It wasn’t all as gross as Karly almost drooling food on to Leah, though.

Sophomores Alaina Adams and Marisa Hendrickson had a spirited game of bowling on the Wii. Marisa kept trying to figure out how Alaina got a strike. She kept coming really close, and then finally got one on the last frame. But Alaina came away with a 155-132 win.

The best part of the night may have come right toward the end when everyone gathered around the TV to watch the video of the scavenger hunt the girls took part in at the mall on their team retreat last weekend.

One of the things they had to to was get someone to switch their hat with one of the girls and wear her headband.

They found one gentleman who didn’t look like he really wanted to take part. A little sweet talking and he decided to make the switch. When he pulled the hat off, you could see why as he was pretty bald.

One guy even allowed Kayla to put some make up on his face. When he was done, he was even willing to say “Go Sparts” to the camera.

The other group even got one teenage boy to let them paint his finger nails, pink if memory serves me well.

Maybe the grossest thing was when Marisa was willing to trade socks with another girl and wear them. I don’t think that was a pleasant experience for Marisa.

Taylor Westly and Gabe Johnson both made fake marriage proposals to people. Gabe proposed to the jewelry store employee (they even let her use a real ring to make the proposal), who afterwards gave a plug for his store on camera. Sorry buddy but no one else is gonna see it.

And I loved how Kayla and Taylor were singing Christmas songs to some shoppers who were taking a break. The goal was to get a compliment.

Well, let’s just say they sang a lot of songs. McKenzie Redberg then joined in and finally they got a compliment from a security guard.

“You guys are doing awesome,” he told them. “But you’ve got to get down now.”

Busted.

The fun and games are over and the team is prepared for the start of the season. They went through three eight-minute scrimmages on Sunday before the team gathering.

Three weeks of practice and conditioning are over. Now it’s time to see it pay off on the court.

Countdown to first official game: 1 day.
